Montenegrin National Minority




The montenegrin minority are a minority that have
always lived within the territory of Albania and maintains its own ethnic and cultural identity. It is mainly concentrated in the Shkodër region and its surroundings. This group also includes Albanian citizens who were expelled from Podgorica in the early 1920s as part of a population exchange agreement between the then Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes and Albania. These people now primarily reside in Shkodër.
Where They Are
Also part of the Montenegrin minority are the political emigrants who arrived after World War II, due to the breakdown of relations between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. They are spread across Albania’s main cities, such as Tirana, Elbasan, Durrës, Fier, Korçë, and others.
Co-Existence
According to the 2023 census, 511 Albanian citizens of Montenegrin origin live in the Republic of Albania. The Montenegrin national minority has always made a significant contribution to Albanian society, and notable figures in the fields of education, culture, science, sports, etc., have emerged from this minority.
