Greek National Minority




The Greek minority live in Albania since 1921
within the framework of the League of Nations. Through continuous efforts, this minority succeeded in preserving its national identity, native Greek language, cultural traditions, customs, and practices. Since its inclusion within the framework of the Albanian state, it has demonstrated a spirit of cooperation and tolerance. It established and strengthened friendly relations and has played a positive role in promoting peaceful coexistence with the Albanian population.
The Greek National Minority has always made a significant contribution to Albanian society, and distinguished figures from this minority have emerged in the fields of education, culture, science, sports, and more.
Dictatorship Period
It is a fact that during the dictatorship period, systematic efforts were made by the regime to restrict the rights of this minority, including severing communication with the motherland and eliminating the national identity of this minority.
The Years of Democracy
During the years of democracy, the Greek national minority has been making every effort for the ongoing democratization of life, for maintaining a climate of cooperation, and for a civilized coexistence based on the country’s Constitution and International Conventions. It is contributing to Albania’s final integration into the greater European family.
Inclusion in the Constitution of Albania
The inclusion of Article 20 in the Constitution of Albania concerning the rights of national minorities, as well as the government’s signing of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities, are important steps toward integration.
